MISSION LOG
In 1985, Star Trek's George Takei joined a group of dedicated fans to make a student film deep in the California forest—only for the footage to mysteriously vanish.
Nearly 40 years later, Beam Me Up, Sulu unearths this lost film, revealing not just a piece of fan history but a broader story of representation, resilience, and the ongoing fight for inclusion in media and society.

BRIDGE CREW
Timour Gregory & Sasha Schneider
Directors
Timour and Sasha co-directed Beam Me Up, Sulu out of their love of cinema and a commitment to celebrating the spirit of diversity and inclusion at the core of Star Trek.
Timour, a British-Egyptian documentary filmmaker, has covered some of the world’s largest humanitarian crises for the United Nations. His exposé of Europe’s most notorious refugee camp, Section B, and his film on the persecution of the Rohingya in Myanmar, Rashed, have been featured on CNN. He was drawn to Beam Me Up, Sulu's deeper historical themes—from the show’s early allegories to the history of internment camps for Japanese Americans that shaped George Takei's life.
Sasha Schneider is a producer and director whose work explores the intersection of representation and the arts. She was inspired by Star Trek’s trailblazing queer legacy and by George Takei’s LGBTQIA+ activism, which forms a powerful through-line in the film.
Both are passionate Trekkies. Read their Directors’ Statement.
